Overview

Tennessee State University is a public, historically black university located in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1912, it is the only state-funded historically black university in the state and holds an R2 classification for high research activity. The university offers an array of academic programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, associate degrees, and certificates across diverse disciplines.

Evolving from its roots as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School, it achieved university status in 1951 and land-grant status in 1958.
