Sound Transit

Overview

Officially known as the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority, this public transit agency serves the Seattle metropolitan area—including Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties in Washington state. Established in 1993, it has become a key provider of regional transit, carrying 42 million passengers in 2024 with an average of over 134,000 weekday riders. The agency places a strong emphasis on affordable and environmentally friendly public transportation, connecting communities and promoting sustainability throughout the region.

The organization operates three main transit services: the Link light rail system, the Sounder commuter rail, and Sound Transit Express buses. The Link light rail functions as the rapid transit backbone, while the Sounder commuter rail connects Everett to Lakewood via Seattle. Express buses offer high-capacity routes across three counties. The agency continues to expand its network, working toward a 252-mile comprehensive transit system and integrating tools such as the ORCA fare card system for seamless travel.
