Overview

San José State University (SJSU) is a public research university located in downtown San Jose, California. Established in 1857, it is the oldest public university in the western United States and the founding campus of the California State University system. The university spans 154 acres and enrolls approximately 37,000 students annually, including around 28,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate and professional students. SJSU is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution, highlighting its diverse student body.

SJSU offers over 250 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its nine colleges. It is classified as an "R2: High Research Activity" institution, known for its significant research output and contributions to fields such as engineering, computer science, and business. The university also operates the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in partnership with the City of San Jose.
