Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, and operates as a subsidiary of Oil India Limited. Established in 1993 in Assam, NRL began commercial production in 2000 with an initial refinery capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). The company is currently expanding its capacity to 9 MMTPA to meet the energy demands of Northeast India and the broader region.
NRL produces a broad range of petroleum products, such as Aviation Turbine Fuel, Motor Spirit, High-Speed Diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, and Paraffin Waxβthe latter being produced at the largest scale in India. The refinery processes both indigenous and imported crude oil and has extended its operations into petrochemicals and natural gas transportation. NRL leads significant infrastructure projects including pipelines to Paradip Port, a transnational pipeline to Bangladesh, and the development of a second-generation ethanol plant using bamboo biomass. The company contributes actively to socio-economic growth and ensures regional energy security.
