Overview

ZeroAvia is focused on developing hydrogen-electric powertrain technology for aviation. Founded in 2018 by Valery Miftakhov, the organization aims to enable zero-emission, low-noise flights for regional aircraft. Teams are located in California, Washington, and the United Kingdom and have achieved milestones such as the world’s first zero-emission flight of a six-seat aircraft in 2019, followed by successful test flights of a 19-seat hydrogen-electric plane in 2023.

The organization is developing hydrogen fuel cell-powered engines that compete with traditional aircraft engines, securing over $100 million in funding from investors like Amazon and British Airways. Collaborations with airlines and aerospace companies support their goal to certify a powertrain for up to 20-seat planes by 2026 and develop larger systems for 30–90 seat aircraft by 2028. The mission is to replace fossil-fuel engines with hydrogen-electric systems, significantly reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint and noise pollution.
