Overview

The University of the Witwatersrand, commonly known as Wits University, is a leading public research university in South Africa, established in 1922. Located in Johannesburg, it evolved from the South African School of Mines founded in 1896. Recognized for academic excellence and significant contributions to science and society, Wits was the first South African university to introduce a nuclear accelerator and a computer.

The institution comprises five faculties and offers around 3,400 courses to approximately 41,000 students, focusing strongly on postgraduate education. Its vibrant campus features extensive library resources, 42 sports clubs, and over 60 student societies. The university upholds social justice, diversity, and inclusivity in accordance with its founding principles and historical stance against apartheid.
