Overview

Established in 1934, Iran's first modern university was created by merging five public colleges into a single institution. Its historical legacy reaches back to the Dar al-Funun, founded in 1851. Officially inaugurated by Reza Shah Pahlavi in 1935, it has played a formative role in Iran’s higher education landscape.

The university consists of multiple faculties across diverse fields such as theology, science, medicine, engineering, and law. Operating more than 60 research centers and over 550 laboratories, it is recognized for its academic excellence, selectivity, and robust student activism. Admitting only the top 10% of applicants, the institution continues to be central to academic progress and political engagement in Iran.
