Overview

Ethiopia's oldest higher education institution, established in 1954 as the Public Health College and Training Center, is renowned for its commitment to serving the nation and region. It was the nation's first medical school and later achieved full university status in 2004. Located in Gondar, the university has a legacy of community-oriented public health solutions, originating from its early response to a malaria epidemic and growing to serve over 23,000 students with more than 100,000 alumni.

The institution provides 87 undergraduate and more than 300 specialized graduate programs, including master's and doctoral degrees in diverse fields such as health sciences, business, and economics. It strongly emphasizes a team-based approach to education, combines academic rigor with community engagement and research, and undertakes significant initiatives to support war-affected and vulnerable populations.
