The War Amps
Overview
A philosophy of "amputees helping amputees" has been the hallmark of the organization since its creation by amputee veterans in 1918. Over time, its programs have expanded from assisting war amputees to serving all Canadian amputees, including children. The Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which is unique in the world, offers comprehensive services to child amputees and their familiesโincluding financial assistance, advocacy, and peer support. The organization also provides resources for adult amputees and maintains a historic commitment to veterans.
The Key Tag Service, established in 1946, was created to offer employment for amputee veterans and to provide Canadians with a valuable key return service. Supported by public donations, the service helps fund a variety of programs without government grants. The sheltered workshop in Ontario has provided jobs for hundreds of people with disabilities, who continue to contribute across the organization today.
