Overview

Texas Southern University (TSU) is a public historically black university located in Houston, Texas. Established in 1927, TSU has a rich history that began with the Houston Colored Junior College. Over the years, it evolved through several name changes, officially becoming Texas Southern University in 1951. The university is situated on a 53-acre campus in Houston's Third Ward, with land donated by philanthropist Hugh Roy Cullen.

TSU offers a wide range of academic programs across various divisions, including the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Law, School of Pharmacy, and School of Technology. The university has expanded its offerings over the decades, adding a School of Business and a School of Education, and it was authorized to confer its first doctoral degree in 1974. Designated as a special purpose institution for urban programming in 1973, TSU continues to serve a diverse student body while upholding its commitment to the African American community.
