Overview

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) is an independent state agency established in 1951. It manages the assets of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), the State Investment Fund (SIF), and other state trust funds, overseeing more than $162 billion in total assets as of December 31, 2024. Approximately 86% of these assets are from the WRS, which serves over 692,000 participants and 1,500 employers across Wisconsin.

SWIB focuses on professional investment management, employing strategies in fixed income, equity, and private markets. The organization emphasizes asset allocation, diversification, corporate governance, and risk management to optimize long-term performance. In 2024, the Core Fund achieved a preliminary one-year net return of 8.5%, surpassing its target return. SWIB's active management has generated over $15 billion in additional value for the Core Fund over the past 20 years, highlighting its significant role in maintaining the funding status of the Wisconsin Retirement System.
