Overview

The State of Vermont serves as the governmental body responsible for the administration and operation of the state of Vermont in the United States. It functions within a constitutional framework first established in 1793, featuring a separation of powers among legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

The state legislature, known as the General Assembly, is bicameral and consists of a House of Representatives and a Senate, both with members elected to two-year terms. The executive branch comprises independently elected officers, and the judiciary is led by the Vermont Supreme Court. Vermont is divided into 14 counties, with local governments managed by cities, towns, and other entities. Notably, Vermont's 1777 constitution was the first in the United States to prohibit slavery and remove property qualifications for voting or holding office.
