Pension Protection Fund

Overview

The Pension Protection Fund (PPF) is a statutory corporation in the UK, established by the Pensions Act 2004 and operational since 2005. It acts as a financial safety net for members of eligible defined benefit pension schemes, protecting their pensions in the event of employer insolvency. The organization safeguards nearly 9 million members across more than 4,900 pension schemes and manages approximately £31-32 billion in assets.

The primary service of the fund is to provide compensation to members when their employer cannot fulfill pension obligations. The organization also administers the Fraud Compensation Fund, which compensates victims of pension fraud, and the Financial Assistance Scheme, supporting members of certain pension schemes not eligible for PPF protection. It is funded through levies on pension schemes, investment income, and recoveries from insolvent employers, enabling independent operation without government funding.
