Overview

The Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) is an independent federal institution that conducts audits and examinations to support Parliament. Its main goal is to provide objective information, advice, and assurance regarding government programs and activities, promoting accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.

As an Officer of Parliament, the OAG operates independently from the government. It performs legislative audits of approximately 100 federal departments and agencies, as well as about 40 Crown corporations and certain territorial governments. The audits cover various sectors, including health, environment, finance, and transportation. The OAG also has a specialized role in environmental auditing through the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

The OAG produces detailed audit reports that assess government stewardship of public funds and recommend improvements. Its work benefits Parliament and, indirectly, the Canadian public by enhancing government accountability and transparency. The Office collaborates with other entities to promote good governance and effect positive change.
