Overview

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) is the largest distributor of treated water in the United States. Acting as a wholesale supplier, MWD serves 26 member agencies, including cities and municipal water districts, across a 5,200-square-mile region. It provides supplemental water to approximately 19 million people in over 300 cities and communities throughout Southern California.

Founded in 1928 to address population growth and groundwater depletion, MWD built the Colorado River Aqueduct and later expanded its role with major contracts for the State Water Project. The district manages water resources through conservation, drought management, and infrastructure development, utilizing reservoirs, treatment plants, and a network of pipelines to ensure reliable delivery and support local conservation efforts.
