Lyon College

Overview

Lyon College is a private liberal arts college located in Batesville, Arkansas. Founded in 1872, it is the oldest independent college in the state still operating under its original charter. The college was established by Reverend Isaac J. Long and other Presbyterian ministers to meet the educational needs of the region. In 1994, it was renamed to honor the Lyon family for their long-standing contributions to the institution.

The college offers bachelor's degrees in disciplines such as liberal arts, sciences, fine and performing arts, education, and business. It follows a 4-1-4 academic calendar and emphasizes a common intellectual experience through its core curriculum. Lyon College provides preprofessional programs and study-abroad opportunities, is recognized for academic excellence, and features faculty with a high percentage holding terminal degrees. Varsity athletic teams, known as the Scots, compete in the NAIA.
