Overview

Lycoming Engines is a historic American manufacturer of aircraft engines, founded in 1845 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Originally producing various mechanical goods, the company shifted focus to engine manufacturing in the early 20th century. By 1929, it began pioneering aircraft engines with the introduction of the R-680, a 9-cylinder radial piston engine.

Today, the company is a key player in the general aviation market, offering a wide range of horizontally opposed, air-cooled piston engines with four, six, and eight cylinders. Their engines power over half of the world’s general aviation fleet, including both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The company is recognized for producing the only FAA-certified aerobatic and helicopter piston engines available. With over 750 FAA type certificates and more than 300,000 piston aircraft engines produced, Lycoming continues to innovate in piston engine technology to meet the evolving needs of aviation. As an operating division of Avco Corporation, a subsidiary of Textron, it serves a diverse customer base, including general aviation manufacturers and private aircraft owners.
