KC Pet Project

Overview

KC Pet Project is a nonprofit organization established in 2011, dedicated to improving the welfare of shelter animals in the Kansas City area. It operates the municipal animal shelter and multiple adoption centers, caring for over 16,000 animals each year across 14 locations in Missouri and Kansas. The organization has achieved national recognition for its innovative animal welfare programs and has successfully reduced euthanasia rates from over 60% to under 10% since taking over the city shelter in 2012.

The mission is to create a compassionate community for pets and people, emphasizing that pets belong with their families. To support this, a variety of services are offered, including veterinary care, pet relinquishment assistance, and a rescue and transport program. Resources for pet owners facing financial hardship are provided through the "Keep ‘Em Together, KC" program, alongside lost and found services and microchipping. With a strong volunteer program contributing over 300,000 hours of support, KC Pet Project plays a vital role in fostering a humane community for animals and people in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
