International Criminal Court

Overview

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a permanent international tribunal located in The Hague, Netherlands. Established by the Rome Statute in 1998, it began operations in 2002. The ICC investigates and prosecutes individuals for serious international crimes, including genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. It acts as a court of last resort when national courts are unable or unwilling to prosecute.

The ICC is structured into four main organs: the Presidency, Judicial Divisions, the Office of the Prosecutor, and the Registry. Each organ has specific responsibilities, from court administration to conducting investigations and providing support for victims and witnesses. The ICC emphasizes accountability and aims to prevent future crimes through its judicial processes, which include pre-trial, trial, and appeals stages.
