Born out of necessity in 1897, the antecedents of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry lie with the Cochin Native Merchants Association. Its first President Haji Abdul Sakoor Haji Essa Sait and a group of Indian merchants initiated efforts to stimulate commercial enterprise and to protect, promote, and safeguard the interests, privileges, and rights of the Indian business community.

In 1930, the association became the ‘Indian Chamber of Commerce’, and later included ‘Industry’ in its name. Headquartered at Mattancherry, with branches at Willingdon Island and Cochin International Airport, the organization primarily assists the EXIM trade by issuing Certificates of Origin, visa recommendation letters, and providing related support services. It is represented on key government committees and is affiliated with national bodies. The organization undertakes initiatives in industry-academia collaboration and aims to foster business growth through innovation and collaboration, staying true to its ethos of sustaining commerce, culture, and community.
