Overview

The executive branch of the European Union (EU) is tasked with proposing legislation, implementing decisions, managing the EU budget, and representing the EU internationally. It operates independently, focusing on the collective interests of the EU rather than individual member states.

Led by President Ursula von der Leyen and a College of 27 Commissioners, over 32,000 civil servants work across various roles. The organization is structured into Directorates-General, each handling specific policy areas, and maintains representation offices in each EU member state, as well as delegations worldwide. Its core functions include proposing new laws, managing spending and budgets, enforcing laws, and negotiating international agreements to serve over 447 million EU citizens and businesses.
