Edward Waters University (EWU) is a private, Christian, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) located in Jacksonville, Florida. Founded in 1866 and the oldest private HBCU in the state, the university was originally established as Brown's Theological Institute by the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and later renamed in honor of AME Bishop Edward Waters in 1892. EWU has a rich history, including the rebuilding of its campus after the 1901 Great Fire.
