East Bay Regional Park District

Overview

The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is a public agency established in 1934, recognized as the first regional park district in the United States. It manages a diverse system of parklands, trails, shorelines, and recreation areas across Alameda and Contra Costa counties in California, covering 1,745 square miles. EBRPD operates 73 regional parks and recreation areas, totaling approximately 126,809 acres, with 1,330 miles of trails and 55 miles of shoreline.

EBRPD's mission is to acquire, preserve, protect, and operate regional parklands for public use while conserving natural resources. The agency offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, and nature programs. Community engagement initiatives, such as the free Trails Challenge, attract thousands of participants each year. EBRPD also focuses on maintaining park facilities, managing resources, and supporting environmental education, contributing to sustainable development goals.
