Overview

The Crop Trust, also known as the Global Crop Diversity Trust, is an international nonprofit organization focused on conserving crop diversity for global benefit. Established in 2004 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Bioversity International, it operates from Bonn, Germany. Its mission is to safeguard the genetic diversity of food crops, essential for adaptation to pests, diseases, and climate change, thereby supporting global food security.

The organization manages a Crop Diversity Endowment Fund that finances the conservation of crop genetic resources in genebanks across over 80 countries. It provides financial support, technical assistance, and capacity building for genebank management, coordinates the backup of crop seeds in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and engages governments and stakeholders worldwide to support its mission. Its efforts ultimately benefit smallholder farmers, plant breeders, researchers, and agricultural institutions worldwide.
