Overview

The organization is the oldest and largest nonprofit in the United States committed to study abroad and intercultural exchange. Since its founding in 1947, it has promoted international understanding through educational exchange programs, evolving from travel coordination for students and teachers to offering diverse academic and cultural experiences worldwide.

It provides semester and year-long study abroad programs for U.S. students, high school exchange initiatives, and J-1 visa opportunities for international students. Intensive language programs and online courses are also available through partnerships such as with Arizona State University. Each year, the organization supports over 340 U.S. colleges and universities, 1,000 high schools, and 35,000 international exchange students, making education accessible through substantial financial aid and scholarships. With its headquarters in Portland, Maine, it operates globally to foster mutual understanding and cultural exchange.
