Overview

Hawai'i faces significant challenges as a hotspot for global plastic marine debris. Rigorous scientific measurements are essential to assess threats, document impacts, and identify solutions to this environmental crisis. The Center for Marine Debris Research develops quality scientific methods and advanced technology for chemistry and exposure studies focused on marine debris in Hawai'i.

This research center is a partnership involving Hawaii Pacific University's College of Natural and Computational Sciences, the Masters of Science in Marine Science program, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Chemical Sciences Division. Its work includes investigating the sources, transport, fate, and impacts of plastic debris, informing management policies, and promoting ocean stewardship toward the ultimate goal of achieving a trash-free ocean.
