Overview

The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) Uganda is a semi-autonomous government body that regulates the capital markets industry in Uganda. Its main responsibilities include ensuring the fair and efficient functioning of the markets, protecting investor interests, and promoting market development. The CMA licenses and supervises market professionals such as broker-dealers, investment advisers, fund managers, and stock exchanges, including the Uganda Securities Exchange and ALTX East Africa Securities Exchange.

The CMA oversees the issuance and trading of various securities, including shares, collective investment schemes, and government and corporate bonds. It operates an Investor Compensation Fund to protect investors from financial losses due to broker or dealer failures. Additionally, the CMA engages in market development through research, investor education, and public awareness initiatives, while enforcing rules to safeguard against market manipulation and unethical practices.
