Founded in 1855 by Ovid Butler and a group of abolitionists, this private university in Indianapolis, Indiana, began as North Western Christian University. Established as a nonsectarian institution, it has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to inclusivity from its inception, admitting men, women, and students of color since its founding. The renaming in 1877 honored its founder’s vision of equity and access.
