BRE Properties (an Essex company)

Overview

BRE Properties was a developer and operator of multifamily apartment communities, primarily focused on the West Coast, particularly California and the Seattle metropolitan area. The company originated as Bank of America Realty and went public in 1970. Over the years, it transitioned to specialize exclusively in multifamily residential properties, ultimately merging with REIT of California in the 1990s.

In April 2014, BRE Properties merged with Essex Property Trust in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at $4.3 billion. This merger created the largest publicly traded apartment REIT on the West Coast, combining their strengths in property development, operations, investment timing, and acquisitions. Today, BRE Properties operates as part of Essex Property Trust, which owns interests in 252 apartment complexes and 3 commercial office buildings, totaling nearly 62,000 apartment units.
