Overview

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the oldest nonprofit conservation and outdoor recreation organization in the United States, founded in Boston in 1876. With a mission to promote outdoor enjoyment and conserve natural lands, AMC has grown to include around 90,000 members and 16,000 volunteers. The organization maintains over 1,800 miles of forest trails and hundreds of shelters, primarily in the northeastern U.S.

AMC organizes approximately 7,000 outdoor trips and activities each year, offering a variety of pursuits such as hiking, skiing, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, and biking. The club also publishes guidebooks, trail maps, and instructional materials to support outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to recreational activities, AMC is committed to land conservation, having raised funds to protect significant wilderness areas, including large tracts bordering the Appalachian Trail in Maine. Through its efforts, AMC fosters a community of outdoor lovers dedicated to both recreation and conservation.
