American School for the Deaf

Overview

The American School for the Deaf, established in 1817 in Hartford, Connecticut, is the oldest permanent school for the deaf in the United States. Founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Mason Cogswell, and Laurent Clerc, the institution was created to provide education and communication skills to deaf children, filling a vital need for local educational facilities at the time. It has played a significant role in the development of Deaf culture and education in America.
