Overview

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) is a public historically Black university located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is part of the Southern University System, the only historically Black college and university system in the world. Founded in 1956, SUNO opened its doors in 1959, aiming to provide higher education opportunities primarily for African American students during a time of segregation.

Today, SUNO serves over 2,300 students and offers 23 degree programs, including accredited Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. The university is dedicated to serving diverse communities and enhancing economic opportunities through education. SUNO has a rich history, including resilience in the face of challenges like Hurricane Katrina, which significantly impacted its campus.
