South Carolina First Steps

Overview

South Carolina First Steps is a state initiative established in 1999 by the South Carolina General Assembly. Its mission is to close the opportunity gap for young learners and ensure that all children are ready to succeed in school. Operating as both a state agency and a nonprofit organization, it utilizes public and private resources to implement effective programs and strategies that enhance early childhood development and school readiness.

The organization focuses on various aspects of early childhood development, including children's health, family support, access to quality education, and smooth transitions to kindergarten. Through a network of 46 local partnerships, it delivers services such as family strengthening programs, early education access, quality child care enhancement, health initiatives, and support for school transitioning. It also provides child care scholarships, parenting resources, and research reports to guide improvements in early childhood outcomes. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it served over 60,000 children and nearly 47,000 adult family members, demonstrating its significant impact across the state.
